Pierre Levegh ‘So near yet so far”

£7,500

An original watercolour signed by the artist Uli Ehret 2009

Pierre Levegh "So near yet so Far"

Dimensions: 500mm (L) × 650mm (W)

I approached Uli Ehret at the Le Mans 24 hours in 2008 with a view to him painting something to commemorate the French Racing driver Pierre Levegh, who, history had only remembered him for what seemed to me to be for all the wrong reasons. After all he had nearly won the 1952 edition of the 24 hours single handedly leading the Mercedes team by over 3 laps with just 45 minutes to go, only for the Le Mans gods to step in and decide it was not to be. As a result Alfred Neubauer invited Levegh to join the Mercedes team for 1955 where tragically Levegh was killed along with over 80 spectators. I was invited to the Paris Retromobile to unveil the painting in 2009. 'So near yet So Far"

features in the Uli Ehret books Racing Legends volumes 2 and 4
